Story: Trapped

Theme: Thinking with a purpose.

Synopsis
The Thunderbolt kids stumble upon an abandoned house. They think they’re seeing ghosts until Tom shows them that the house isn’t haunted. The people responsible for the fake ghosts that they see are drug-manufacturing gangsters who capture the kids. While the Thunderbolt Kids are locked up they make and reject several escape plans before tying old ghost suits together into a rope, which they use to climb out the window. They are almost captured again before they make it back to safety but the school guard dogs save them.

The central theme of the story is introduced when Sophie asks “What now?” and the kids begin to explore a variety of plans for escape. They begin by making their purpose clear, which is to choose a plan for escape that is both physically safe and safe from alerting the gangsters. They then ask a series of strategy-based questions from Polya's ‘How to Solve It’ process, which help them to explore different options for escape. The story deals with an immediate and practical problem that must be solved quickly, which helps to show your learners how simple and yet useful the ’How to Solve It’ method can be.
